Rites of Labor
Date TBA
Rites of Labor provides a broad overview of contemporary practices that consider how we conceive the organization of labor and social exchange in the corporate world, the art world, and even the artist studio.
Artists works will humorously and playfully explore this predominant form of social organization reflecting on the aesthetics of offices and the lingering importance of the desk in an age gone digital. Western attachment to the idea of the office space – individual and shared – might have once corresponded to strategies of productivity. Today, it can be suggested that this attachment also stems from nostalgia for clerical activity, and a certain desire for control where employees are required to perform the tasks associated to productivity and labor.
Subverting and engaging with the idea of the 9 to 5, Rites of Labor divides the gallery into twelve chessboard-like sections, each desk hosting a different artists work or intervention. Artists will also be invited to respond to the exhibition in their own manner, installing works on these repurposed desks and tables, inserting their own designed objects and pieces within the grid
